Tanker Spills 33,000 Litres of Diesel After Brake Failure in Oyo

A Mack trailer tanker loaded with 33,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil, commonly known as diesel, has overturned by the roadside in Oyo State following an alleged brake failure.

The incident occurred after the tanker, with registration number AFN 467 XA, lost control and fell by the roadside, spilling part of its contents.

The Oyo State Fire Services Agency said it received a distress call about the accident at approximately 1:39 p.m.

Fire service personnel led by A. Wahab responded to the scene and found the tanker overturned by the roadside.

The team immediately commenced emergency operations to prevent a possible fire outbreak by applying foam chemicals to the affected area and securing the scene.

A preliminary assessment by the fire service identified brake failure as the likely cause of the accident.

No casualty was recorded in the incident.

The fire appliance involved in the operation returned safely to the station at about 6:26 p.m. and remained on operational standby.

The Special Adviser on Fire Services Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Dr Moroof Akinwande, urged motorists to prioritise regular vehicle maintenance and comply with traffic regulations.

Akinwande also advised drivers to avoid speeding, fatigue and reckless manoeuvres that could endanger lives and property.

He stressed the importance of proper vehicle maintenance, particularly for operators of heavy-duty vehicles transporting flammable materials.

The incident highlights the risks associated with mechanical failures involving fuel tankers and the need for strict adherence to safety measures on major roads.
