Suspected Terrorists Attack Gubio’s Convoy In Borno

Suspected terrorists on Thursday attacked the convoy of the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Borno State, Mustapha Gubio, along the Kareto-Damasak Road.

The incident occurred at about 2:30pm as Gubio and his team travelled towards Damasak as part of an appreciation tour of northern Borno.

The Borno State Police Command confirmed the attack, saying no member of the entourage was killed.

Police spokesperson ASP Nahum Daso said the convoy was attacked by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists but was protected by security personnel who successfully repelled the assault.

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said police tactical operatives counter-engaged the attackers after they attacked the convoy with an improvised explosive device and rocket-propelled grenades.

According to him, the security team forced the attackers to retreat into the surrounding bush before scanning and clearing the area to guard against possible secondary explosive threats.

The convoy, which included Gubio, government officials and political stakeholders, was subsequently evacuated to a secure location.

No casualties were recorded among members of the entourage, although sources said the attack was brief and could have caused casualties without the intervention of security personnel.

One source said the attackers used an improvised explosive device and rocket-propelled grenades during the assault.

Despite the attack, the convoy continued its journey after the area was secured.

The incident highlights the continuing security challenges along parts of northern Borno, where terrorist groups remain capable of attacking major roads and movements.
