Sunderland Beat Chelsea 1-0 to Escape Premier League Bottom
Sunderland secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Chelsea through Enzo Le Fee’s penalty, climbing off the bottom of the Premier League table.
Sunderland boosted their Premier League survival hopes on Sunday after defeating Chelsea 1-0 at the Stadium of Light, ending their eight-game winless run in the competition.
Enzo Le Fee scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the 36th minute, giving the Black Cats a valuable victory over Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea side.
The result moved Sunderland off the bottom of the Premier League table, providing relief for manager Regis Le Bris and his players after a difficult run of results.
Sunderland started the encounter with greater intensity and created several opportunities through forward Brian Brobbey, who caused problems for Chelsea’s defence.
However, the home side suffered an early setback when captain Granit Xhaka was forced off with an injury just three minutes into the match. He was replaced by Jules Ahoka.
Chelsea also had opportunities to take the lead. Morgan Rogers headed a Marco Palestra cross wide, while Cole Palmer appealed for a penalty after going down under a challenge from Luke O’Nien. The referee and video assistant referee did not award a spot-kick, with the contact judged to have occurred outside the penalty area.
Sunderland eventually broke the deadlock after Brobbey was brought down by Chelsea defender Levi Colwill inside the box. Le Fee stepped forward and calmly converted the resulting penalty in the 36th minute.
Chelsea manager Alonso responded at half-time by introducing Estevao in place of Colwill, but the visitors struggled to break down Sunderland’s organised defence.
Despite enjoying more possession, Chelsea failed to create enough clear-cut opportunities to trouble goalkeeper Robin Roefs consistently.
Sunderland came close to extending their advantage when substitute Wilson Isidor found himself through on goal, but Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders produced an important save.
Chelsea continued searching for an equaliser in the closing stages, but substitute Danny Welbeck headed over the crossbar during stoppage time.
The final whistle confirmed Sunderland’s first Premier League victory in eight matches and their first league win since August.
The result lifted Sunderland to 18th position with eight points from 10 matches, while Chelsea dropped to fifth with 16 points.
The defeat represents another setback for Alonso, whose team will now seek to regain consistency after losing four of their opening 10 league matches.
