The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, Akintunde Sawyerr, has rejected allegations that the student loan scheme is politically biased.

Sawyerr described the allegation as “completely ridiculous”, saying the loan application system was not designed to identify or consider applicants’ political affiliations.

He explained that the electronic application process requires basic information such as a student’s name and matriculation number.

According to him, the system has no mechanism for detecting whether an applicant belongs to a particular political party or supports a particular politician.

Sawyerr made the remarks on Sunday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme.

He maintained that eligible students are assessed through the established application process rather than their political affiliations.
