Spanish Footballer Dies After On-Field Collision With Opponent’s Goalkeeper

Spanish footballer Jesús de Miguel has died at the age of 30 after suffering serious injuries in a collision with an opposing goalkeeper during a second-division match.

De Miguel, a striker for CD Tenerife, died on Tuesday, November 3, a day after the incident during his club’s home fixture against FC Andorra at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López.

The collision occurred in the closing minutes of the game when Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out of his goal to clear a long ball. His knee struck De Miguel, who was challenging for possession, causing the Tenerife forward to collapse on the pitch.

Medical personnel immediately attended to the player, who reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest. Medics restored his pulse in the ambulance before he was taken to the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

CD Tenerife initially described his condition as serious but stable. However, the club later announced that his neurological condition had deteriorated before confirming his death at 8:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday.

The match, which was level at 2-2, was abandoned following the incident. Owono was shown a straight red card for the collision.

In a statement announcing De Miguel’s death, CD Tenerife expressed profound grief and extended its condolences to his family, friends, teammates and supporters.

FC Andorra also paid tribute to the player, describing the news as devastating and expressing sympathy with his loved ones and the Tenerife football community.

Tributes have continued to pour in from across Spanish football, including Real Madrid, Barcelona and the Spanish Football Federation.

The federation announced the postponement of Tuesday’s Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina fixtures as a mark of respect following the tragedy.

De Miguel joined Tenerife in 2025 from Castellón and helped the club secure promotion to Spain’s second division. He had previously represented several Spanish clubs during his professional career.

His death has sent shockwaves through Spanish football, with clubs and players mourning the loss of the forward.
