Spain Beat England 3-2 In Nations League Thriller at Wembley
Spain came from behind to beat England 3-2 at Wembley, with Lamine Yamal, Alex Baena and Mikel Oyarzabal scoring for the world champions.
Spain came from behind to defeat England 3-2 in a thrilling UEFA Nations League Group A3 encounter at Wembley on Saturday.
Lamine Yamal gave Spain an early lead in the second minute after Marc Guehi’s error allowed the winger to run through on goal and finish past James Trafford.
England recovered from the early setback and equalised in the 36th minute through Anthony Gordon, who finished a swift counter-attack after combining with Jude Bellingham.
Four minutes later, Harry Kane put England ahead with a header from Nico O’Reilly’s cross, giving the hosts a 2-1 lead at half-time.
England had an opportunity to extend their advantage early in the second half after a VAR review determined that Rodri had fouled Bellingham inside the penalty area.
Kane, however, slipped while taking the penalty and sent his effort against the crossbar.
Spain took advantage of the missed opportunity, with substitute Alex Baena equalising in the 60th minute.
Baena then played a role in the winning goal, setting up fellow substitute Mikel Oyarzabal to put Spain ahead in the 74th minute.
England pushed for an equaliser but could not find a third goal as Spain held on for victory.
The result extended Spain’s unbeaten run to 39 matches and moved them to the top of Nations League Group A3. England dropped to third after Croatia defeated the Czech Republic 2-1 in the other group fixture.
The defeat was a setback for Thomas Tuchel’s side, who had taken the lead after Spain conceded two goals in four first-half minutes.
England will next face the Czech Republic before travelling to Croatia, while their return fixture against Spain will be played in Madrid in November.
