Sowore Returns to Nigeria, Resumes 2027 Presidential Campaign
African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has returned to Nigeria from the United States to resume his nationwide campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has returned to Nigeria from the United States to resume his campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Sowore disclosed his return in a statement issued to journalists on Sunday, saying he was pleased to be back with his family and in the country after more than 20 months in the United States.
He said his departure from Nigeria followed what he described as arrests, detention, travel restrictions and the seizure of his international passport by Nigerian security agencies.
While in the United States, Sowore said he engaged members of the Nigerian diaspora, supporters, activists and other stakeholders on national issues and his political agenda.
He also said he participated in a solidarity march for Palestine in New York and continued advocating voting rights for Nigerians living abroad.
The AAC candidate said his administration, if elected, would pursue diaspora voting to enable Nigerians living outside the country to participate in elections.
Sowore said his return marked another phase of his nationwide campaign and that he would engage workers, students, youths, women, farmers, traders, professionals and communities across the country.
He said the engagements would focus on issues contained in the AAC’s 2027 agenda, including equal rights, justice, peace, security and economic development.
Sowore said he would also continue attending court proceedings relating to the cybercrime case instituted against him by the Department of State Services in 2025.
He said the 2027 election would provide Nigerians with an opportunity to determine the direction of the country’s political leadership.
The Independent National Electoral Commission has listed Sowore and his running mate, Haruna Garba Magashi, among the 18 presidential candidates cleared for the January 2027 election.
Sowore said his campaign would continue to advocate what he described as fundamental political, social and economic transformation and would take the message directly to Nigerians across the country.
