Southampton Lead Tributes After Sudden Death of Nigerian Winger Victor Udoh at 21

The Nigerian footballing community has been plunged into mourning once again following the tragic passing of former Southampton and Royal Antwerp winger Victor Udoh at the age of 21.

Udoh’s untimely death occurs just a month after the passing of former Super Eagles forward Michael Eneramo, compounding the sense of grief across the nation's football landscape.

According to widespread reports, the young attacker passed away in Abuja on Monday night, with initial indications linking the tragedy to suspected food or alcohol poisoning. He was reportedly in the capital on holiday at the time. However, official confirmation regarding the precise cause of death remains unavailable at this stage.

Belgian outfit Royal Antwerp, where Udoh first made a name for himself in European football, released an emotional statement on Tuesday confirming the devastating news.

"It is with immense sadness that RAFC has learned of the passing of our former player Victor Udoh (21)," the club stated.

The club fondly remembered the Nigerian’s exceptional breakthrough during the 2023/24 campaign with the Young Reds, where he netted 12 goals in 21 appearances before being promoted to the senior squad.

"Victor arrived at the Bosuil for the 2023/2024 season, scoring twelve times in 21 matches during his first year with the Young Reds. That same season, he made his senior debut in a home fixture against Charleroi," the club's tribute continued.

"In total, Victor featured in 28 official matches for The Great Old and provided two assists before securing a transfer to Southampton. Our deepest condolences go out to Victor's family, friends, and loved ones. We wish them immense strength and comfort during this incredibly painful time. Rest in peace, Victor."

English side Southampton also expressed their profound sorrow over the news.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our former player Victor Udoh at just 21 years of age," the Saints announced. "Everyone at #SaintsFC sends their thoughts and prayers to Victor's family and friends during this heartbreaking time."

Blessed with raw pace, a direct attacking style, and sharp goalscoring instincts, Udoh was widely considered one of Nigeria's brightest young prospects abroad during his developmental years in Belgium.

His sudden passing has sparked a wave of condolences from football fans and former teammates across social media, with many expressing utter disbelief at the loss of a talent whose career was only just beginning to flourish.

The tragedy marks another painful chapter for Nigerian football, following the loss of 40-year-old former international striker Michael Eneramo last month. More details regarding Udoh’s passing are expected to surface over the coming days.
