South Africa’s Zwane Handed Three-Match Ban After Red Card Against Mexico
South Africa midfielder Themba Zwane has received a three-match suspension from FIFA after his red card against Mexico in the World Cup opener, leaving Bafana Bafana without a key player.
South Africa midfielder Themba Zwane has been handed a three-match suspension following his red card during the team’s 2026 FIFA World Cup opening match against Mexico, FIFA announced on Wednesday.
Zwane was dismissed late in South Africa’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico at the Azteca Stadium after he was judged to have struck Mexican defender Roberto Alvarado in the face during an attacking move.
The incident occurred after Zwane, who had come on as a substitute, attempted to dribble past Alvarado near the edge of the penalty area. During the challenge between both players, his hand made contact with the Mexican defender’s face, leading referee to issue a straight red card.
The 36-year-old midfielder had spent just over 20 minutes on the pitch before being sent off. South Africa were already playing with 10 men after midfielder Sphephelo Sithole was dismissed earlier in the match.
Sithole received his red card after bringing down an opponent who was through on goal, leaving Bafana Bafana to finish the encounter with nine players.
South Africa coach Hugo Broos questioned Zwane’s dismissal after the match, although he accepted Sithole’s sending-off decision.
“The second red card we can discuss. It was the Mexican player who was blocking my player. But it’s the position of the referee, and we have to accept it also, but I think it was too soft to give that as a red card,” Broos said.
He added that Sithole’s dismissal was understandable because the midfielder denied a clear goalscoring opportunity.
A straight red card at the World Cup normally results in an automatic one-match suspension. However, FIFA’s disciplinary committee has the authority to increase the punishment depending on the severity of the offence.
The extended suspension means Zwane will miss South Africa’s next three World Cup matches unless the decision is overturned on appeal.
FIFA confirmed that South Africa have the option to challenge the disciplinary ruling.
Bafana Bafana, who are competing in Group A, will face the Czech Republic in Atlanta on Thursday in their second group fixture as they attempt to recover from their opening defeat.
The team will now have to cope without one of their most experienced players as they fight to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
