Sokoto Varsity SSANU Resumes Work, Gives Fresh 14-Day Ultimatum
SSANU members at Sokoto State University have suspended their strike and resumed work, giving the state government 14 days to address their outstanding demands.
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Sokoto State University branch, has suspended its industrial action and directed members to resume work while giving the state government a fresh 14-day ultimatum to address its outstanding demands.
The decision followed discussions between the union and the university management over issues that led to the industrial action.
The union said the resumption of work was not an indication that its grievances had been fully resolved, stressing that the government must use the additional period to address the outstanding issues.
SSANU members had embarked on the strike to protest unresolved welfare and employment-related concerns affecting non-academic staff of the institution.
The union maintained that its members had made several efforts to secure a resolution through dialogue but were yet to receive satisfactory responses to their demands.
By suspending the strike, the association has given the authorities another opportunity to address the dispute without further disruption to academic and administrative activities at the university.
The 14-day ultimatum is expected to provide a window for the state government and university management to engage the union and reach an agreement.
SSANU warned that failure to meet its demands within the stipulated period could lead to a fresh industrial action.
The development comes amid recurring labour disputes in Nigeria’s university system, where non-academic staff unions have continued to demand improved welfare, better working conditions and the implementation of outstanding agreements.
The resumption is expected to restore normal administrative activities at Sokoto State University while negotiations continue over the union’s demands.
The state government and university management are yet to publicly provide a comprehensive response to the latest ultimatum.
