Sokoto Governor Doubles Corps Members’ Allowance to ₦20,000
Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has increased the monthly allowance for corps members serving in the state from ₦10,000 to ₦20,000 and announced a one-off ₦30,000 cash gift for those undergoing orientation.
Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has approved a 100 per cent increase in the monthly state allowance paid to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state, raising it from ₦10,000 to ₦20,000.
The governor also announced a cash gift of ₦30,000 for each corps member currently undergoing orientation at the NYSC camp.
Aliyu made the announcements on Friday during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch C Stream II corps members at the NYSC Temporary Orientation Camp, College of Administration, Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic, Sokoto.
He said the measures reflected his administration's commitment to improving the welfare of corps members and providing a conducive environment for their service.
The governor also approved the donation of a Toyota Hilux vehicle to the NYSC to strengthen its monitoring and supervision activities, particularly in areas with difficult terrain.
He further pledged to provide five cows daily to feed corps members throughout the orientation exercise.
Aliyu directed the management of the institution hosting the camp to urgently address challenges affecting electricity and water supply to ensure better conditions for the participants.
He said the contribution of corps members to national integration and unity remained important, assuring them that their security and welfare would continue to receive attention.
The governor disclosed that his administration had committed more than ₦1bn to the renovation and upgrading of the permanent NYSC orientation camp in Wamakko Local Government Area, with the project reportedly about 90 per cent complete.
He also urged ministries, government agencies and other employers to accept corps members posted to their organisations rather than reject them.
Aliyu announced that a committee would be established to ensure effective implementation of the newly approved allowance.
Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Tyoyer Gabriel Ter, commended the governor for supporting the scheme and improving the welfare of corps members.
Ter said the governor's consistent assistance could earn him recognition as the most NYSC-friendly governor.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, particularly his provision of bulls during orientation exercises and awards for outstanding corps members at passing-out parades.
The Chief Judge of Sokoto State, Justice Muhammad Saidu Sifawa, represented by Justice Muhammad A. Sambo, administered the oath of allegiance to the newly deployed corps members.
