Senegal Speaker Predicts Victory Over France in World Cup Opener
Ousmane Sonko says Senegal’s clash with France carries wider significance, highlighting Africa’s influence on global football while expressing confidence that the Teranga Lions can defeat the European giants.
The Speaker of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, has expressed confidence that Senegal can defeat France in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Sonko described Tuesday’s encounter as more than a football fixture, saying the contest also reflects Africa’s influence on the global football stage due to the number of players of African heritage representing France.
Speaking during an interview with RFI and France 24 in Dakar on Monday, the Senegalese politician said he hoped his country would emerge victorious against the former world champions.
“I think Senegal will win. At least, that’s my hope, like every Senegalese person,” Sonko said.
He added that while the game should primarily be viewed as a sporting event, its broader significance could not be ignored.
“In any case, it’s only a football match. But if you want to look at the match politically, then whoever wins, Africa will have beaten Africa,” he said.
Sonko noted that the presence of several players with African roots in the French squad demonstrates the continent’s contribution to world football and highlights Africa’s human capital.
He argued that Africa’s resources, youthful population and strategic importance should encourage the continent to recognise its value in global affairs.
“The message I always give to Africans is that if we understand our own value and embrace it, we have natural resources, human resources, a rapidly growing and overwhelmingly young population and a strategic position,” he said.
According to him, such realities should influence discussions around Africa’s relationship with Europe, including issues surrounding migration and economic cooperation.
The Senegalese speaker’s comments came during a broader interview where he discussed domestic politics, economic issues, regional security and the future of West African integration.
Senegal qualified for the 2026 World Cup with expectations high among supporters, while France enters the tournament as one of the teams expected to challenge for the title.
The match between both sides is expected to attract global attention due to their historical ties and the large number of African-born or African-descended players in international football.
Sonko, a former prime minister, was elected Speaker of Senegal’s National Assembly in May, shortly after leaving his position as head of government.
