Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has convened a high-level strategic roundtable with the Lagos State Office of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the United Nations Global Compact Networks and regional partners from Africa and the Caribbean to address growing climate threats facing the state.

The executive session focused on developing immediate solutions and sustainable climate financing frameworks to protect coastal communities and critical infrastructure from future extreme weather events.

Sanwo-Olu said Lagos, as a low-lying coastal megacity, was particularly exposed to rising sea levels, coastal erosion and recurrent urban flooding.

He said the effects of climate change were already being felt through flooding affecting communities and putting pressure on roads, homes and businesses.

The governor said the physical and economic impact on municipal infrastructure required a shift from policy discussions to immediate structural protection and proactive financial planning.

A major focus of the meeting was how to bridge the funding gap for large-scale resilience projects by mobilising private-sector investment alongside international development financing.

Sanwo-Olu said government funding alone would not be sufficient to build long-term protection against the environmental pressures facing Lagos.

He stressed the importance of partnerships with private-sector organisations and international institutions in developing practical measures to strengthen the state's resilience.

The collaborative framework involving the UN Global Compact Networks and transatlantic partners is expected to develop scalable models for coastal defence, infrastructure reinforcement and climate-resilient urban development across Lagos State.
