Ronaldo Kept Quiet as DR Congo Hold Portugal to 1-1 Draw
Cristiano Ronaldo’s record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance ended without a goal as DR Congo secured their first-ever tournament point after holding Portugal to a 1-1 draw in Houston.
Portugal were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday as Cristiano Ronaldo made history with a record-equalling sixth FIFA World Cup appearance.
The Portuguese captain started the match in Houston as his country opened their 2026 World Cup campaign against a determined DR Congo side seeking their first-ever point in the competition.
Portugal began brightly and took the lead in the first half through Joao Neves, who converted to give Roberto Martinez’s team an early advantage.
However, DR Congo responded strongly and refused to be overwhelmed by the European side. Their persistence paid off in first-half stoppage time when Yoane Wissa scored the equaliser to level the contest.
The goal sparked celebrations among the Congolese players and supporters, as it represented a historic moment for the nation at their first World Cup appearance.
Ronaldo, who has been the focal point of Portugal’s attack for nearly two decades, struggled to make a decisive impact during the encounter. The veteran forward was unable to add to his World Cup goal tally as DR Congo’s defence kept him under control.
The draw means Portugal missed the opportunity to begin their tournament with a victory, while DR Congo claimed a valuable point against one of the competition’s highly rated teams.
Ronaldo’s appearance placed him alongside the few players who have featured in six different World Cup tournaments, further extending his remarkable international career.
The forward, who has won multiple individual honours and remains Portugal’s all-time leading scorer, continues to chase more milestones despite advancing in age.
For DR Congo, the result represented a major achievement and a statement of their ability to compete against elite football nations.
Their disciplined defensive display and attacking efficiency earned them praise, with the team showing determination and organisation throughout the match.
Portugal will now turn their attention to their next group fixture as they look to strengthen their chances of advancing to the knockout stage.
Meanwhile, DR Congo will aim to build on their historic result and continue their impressive debut campaign at football’s biggest tournament.
