Robotic Surgery Cuts Pain, Shortens Hospital Stay, Surgeons Say
Surgeons at Redeemer’s Health Village in Ogun State say robotic-assisted surgery can reduce pain, blood loss and recovery time, following the facility’s first robotic prostate cancer operation.
Surgeons at Redeemer’s Health Village in Ogun State have said robotic-assisted surgery can reduce patients’ pain and shorten hospital stays because the technique uses smaller incisions and causes less tissue damage.
The experts made the observation on Wednesday after the facility successfully performed its first robotic-assisted surgery, involving a middle-aged man with prostate cancer.
The procedure was performed by urology specialists, the hospital’s medical team and robotic surgeons from RoboMed Global Inc., a United States-based company.
Chief Executive Officer of Redeemer’s Health Village, Dr Ademola Dada, said robotic surgery was minimally invasive and offered greater precision, which could support faster recovery.
He said patients undergoing such procedures could potentially return home on the same day or the following day, with less trauma and improved surgical outcomes.
Dada said the hospital planned to make robotic surgery more affordable and accessible to patients requiring procedures for prostate cancer and other conditions.
He added that the facility intended to expand robotic-assisted procedures beyond prostate cancer to include cervical, uterine and colorectal cancers, as well as other medical conditions.
Dada disclosed that one of the upcoming procedures would involve a 28-year-old doctor with a congenital kidney deformity that had begun damaging the organ.
He said the procedure would aim to address the condition before further damage occurred, potentially allowing the patient to return to normal life.
Dada said the hospital’s broader objective was to establish Redeemer’s Health Village as a major destination for advanced healthcare services in Nigeria and across Africa.
