Rivers Gives Commercial Drivers Ultimatum to Paint Vehicles

The Rivers State Ministry of Transport has given commercial transport operators in the state until October 31, 2026, to paint their vehicles in the approved state colours.

The directive affects operators of taxis, buses and tricycles, popularly known as Keke, across the state.

The ministry said the measure was aimed at improving public safety and making legitimate commercial transport vehicles easier for commuters to identify.

The directive was contained in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Vera Sam-Dike.

The ministry said monitoring and enforcement would commence on November 1, immediately after the expiration of the deadline.

It warned that any commercial vehicle operating without the approved colour scheme after the deadline would be impounded.

The affected operator would also be barred from service until the vehicle was brought into compliance and applicable fines were paid.

The ministry urged owners of unpainted or improperly painted commercial vehicles to complete the required changes before the deadline.

It also directed transport operators seeking further information to contact the Head of the Land Transportation Department, Engr. Andrew Alapuberesisika.

The ministry said information would also be provided on painting workshops offering subsidised rates to help operators comply with the directive.

It appreciated transport union leaders and vehicle owners whose vehicles had already been painted in line with the approved colour scheme.

The Rivers State Government said strict enforcement of the directive would commence from November 1, 2026.
