Rivers DPO, DO Suspended Over Renovation of Police Post by Suspected Cultists
Two Rivers State police officers have been removed from their duties after suspected cultists reportedly renovated Abuloma Police Outpost in Port Harcourt.
The Rivers State Police Command has relieved two senior officers of their duties following allegations that suspected cultists renovated the Abuloma Police Outpost in Port Harcourt.
The officers are the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Abuloma Division and the Divisional Officer overseeing the affected police outpost. They have been queried and removed from their positions pending an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the renovation.
The command announced the action on Friday through its Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Blessing Agabe, following the circulation of a video showing suspected cultists at the facility on Thursday, October 15, 2026.
According to the command, the individuals allegedly visited the outpost to celebrate the completion of the renovation, prompting public concern over the involvement of suspected cult groups in improving a police facility.
The Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga A. Adepoju, ordered a full investigation to establish the circumstances of the project and determine whether the allegations were substantiated.
The investigation will examine the identities and backgrounds of the individuals or groups that financed or facilitated the renovation, the officers who authorised or approved the project, and whether established procedures were followed.
The command said it would also determine whether any police personnel breached professional standards or compromised the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.
In its statement, the police command condemned any association capable of undermining the discipline, independence and professional standards of the force.
It maintained that police facilities are public institutions established to protect citizens and enforce the law, adding that they must not become platforms for criminal groups to gain recognition or influence.
However, the command acknowledged that Section 26(1)(d) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020 permits legitimate gifts and contributions to the Police General Fund.
It stressed that such assistance must comply with appropriate procedures and must not compromise police independence, security or professional standards.
The command added that no donation or assistance would confer immunity from investigation or prosecution.
It said appropriate disciplinary and legal action would be taken against anyone found culpable after the investigation.
The police urged members of the public to remain calm and continue providing credible information to support security operations across the state.
