Prominent Clubs Face Anxious Finale as Intense Relegation Battle Reaches NPFL Climax
Relegation drama intensifies in the Nigeria Premier Football League as Enyimba, Remo Stars, and Kano Pillars battle to avoid the drop. With just three points separating multiple teams, the final round will be decisive, while at the top, Enugu Rangers and Rivers United remain locked in a tight title race.
With the final round of matches in the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) approaching next weekend, traditional powerhouses Enyimba, reigning champions Remo Stars, and Kano Pillars find themselves embroiled in a high-stakes battle to avoid the drop, alongside several other endangered teams.
Following the confirmed demotion of Wikki Tourists and Bayelsa United, nine clubs remain mathematically vulnerable to taking the final relegation spots. The competition at the bottom of the table is incredibly tight, with a mere three points separating tenth-placed Kano Pillars, who sit on 48 points, from seventeenth-placed Niger Tornadoes on 45 points. Occupying the middle ground are Kwara United, Plateau United, and El-Kanemi on 47 points each, whilst Enyimba, Remo Stars, and Warri Wolves are tied just below them on 46 points.
The final weekend throws up several decisive fixtures, most notably in Aba, where Enyimba face El-Kanemi in a match where the winner is guaranteed safety, whilst a draw would only benefit the visiting team. Meanwhile, Remo Stars face a daunting away fixture against Bendel Insurance in Benin, needing a victory to secure their top-flight status. Warri Wolves must also capitalise on their home advantage against Abia Warriors to avoid relegation, and Niger Tornadoes face a must-win scenario against Shooting Stars whilst hoping for a favourable sequence of results elsewhere.
At the opposite end of the division, the championship race is equally fiercely contested between Enugu Rangers, who lead the standings with 65 points, and Rivers United, who trail by a single point. To claim the title, Rangers must secure a victory in Lagos against an Ikorodu City side that is still pursuing a continental qualification spot, whilst Rivers United will look to capitalise on any slip-up when they host Katsina United in Port Harcourt.
