Postcode Initiative Will Aid Ekiti’s Emergence as Digital Hub — Oyebanji

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to Nigeria’s National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode Project, saying the initiative will help position the state as a hub for digital innovation and economic growth.

Oyebanji made the declaration during a two-day stakeholder engagement and inception workshop on the national postcode project and the Statewide Enterprise Addressing Management System in Ado-Ekiti.

The workshop, organised by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) in collaboration with the Ekiti State Geospatial Data Centre, brought together traditional rulers, local government representatives, government agencies, technical partners and community stakeholders.

Represented by the state project’s focal person, Olusanmi Akintobi, the governor commended NIPOST for selecting Ekiti as one of the pioneer states for the initiative.

He said the project would address limitations in the conventional postcode system by providing unique digital codes for streets, buildings and settlements, making locations easier to identify and verify.

According to the governor, accurate digital addresses would improve emergency response, public safety, infrastructure planning, tax administration and the delivery of public services. The system could also help businesses identify customers, streamline logistics and expand access to e-commerce and other digital services.

Oyebanji said his administration had provided institutional support for the initiative through investments in the Ekiti State Geospatial Data Centre and the establishment of governance frameworks to facilitate data sharing, stakeholder participation and legal compliance.

He described the project as a priority under the state’s digital economy and land administration reform agenda, adding that reliable addressing infrastructure was essential for innovation and the growth of technology-driven businesses.

The governor also noted that the system could support social protection programmes by helping government identify underserved communities, improve poverty mapping and target welfare interventions more accurately.

Earlier, NIPOST Postmaster-General and Chief Executive Officer, Tola Odeyemi, represented by Abdulwakil Jamiu, described the project as an important step in Nigeria’s digital transformation.

She said Ekiti was selected as a pioneer state because of its educational development and institutional capacity, while urging government agencies, traditional institutions, businesses and community representatives to participate in validating address data.

Executive Secretary of the Ekiti State Bureau of Lands, Kayode Ojo, said collaboration with NIPOST began in December 2025. He explained that the workshop would establish implementation priorities, clarify stakeholders’ responsibilities and develop a roadmap for field operations.

The National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System was launched by the Federal Government on October 1, 2026. It is designed to give every addressable building in Nigeria a unique 11-character digital postcode to support more accurate location identification and service delivery.
