Portugal FA Hands Ronaldo 30-Day Suspension, €255 Fine

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has handed captain Cristiano Ronaldo a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine for leaving the national team’s camp following a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus.

The federation’s Disciplinary Council announced the punishment on Monday, October 19, after concluding proceedings against the 41-year-old forward over his departure from Portugal’s camp in Copenhagen, Denmark, on September 30.

According to the disciplinary ruling, Ronaldo was found guilty of intentionally committing an offence under Article 160(1) of the federation’s disciplinary regulations.

The incident followed Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway on September 27, when Ronaldo warmed up but remained an unused substitute. The forward reportedly became frustrated over his role in the team and accused Jesus of breaking promises regarding his playing time.

Ronaldo subsequently left the national team camp ahead of Portugal’s Nations League fixture against Denmark, which Portugal won 4-2.

The decision imposed a 30-day suspension, the minimum penalty provided for under the relevant regulations, alongside a fine of €255.

The federation backdated the suspension to October 1, meaning Ronaldo is expected to complete the ban before Portugal’s next international fixtures in November.

Portugal are scheduled to face Denmark on November 14 before travelling to play Wales on November 17 in their final Nations League group matches.

The disciplinary ruling did not initially provide detailed clarification on how the suspension would affect specific matches, but reports indicate the backdated sanction should not prevent Ronaldo from returning for those fixtures.

Ronaldo apologised publicly earlier in October for his conduct, acknowledging that leaving the camp was a mistake and expressing his willingness to accept the consequences.

FPF president Pedro Proença has also indicated that the federation wants the captain to return to the national team once the disciplinary matter is resolved.

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s all-time leading international goalscorer and record appearance-maker, making the dispute a significant development for the national side as it prepares for upcoming international engagements.
