Police Warn Politicians Against Campaign Poster, Billboard Destruction, Vow Arrest, Prosecution
The Nigeria Police Force has directed commissioners across the 36 states and FCT to investigate the destruction of campaign materials and prosecute those found responsible.
The Nigeria Police Force has warned politicians, political supporters and suspected political thugs against destroying campaign posters, banners and billboards belonging to rival candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The warning was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday, November 4, by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, in Abuja.
The police said they had observed increasing incidents of deliberate tearing, defacement and destruction of political campaign materials across the country, describing the acts as political intolerance capable of undermining peaceful political participation.
The Force noted that destroying, defacing or unlawfully removing another candidate’s campaign materials could constitute malicious damage, a criminal offence under applicable laws.
It specifically cited Section 451 of the Criminal Code Act and Section 326 of the Penal Code Law, which addresses the offence of mischief.
“Political differences or loyalty to a particular party do not give anyone the right to destroy another candidate’s property or infringe on their right to campaign freely,” the statement said.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has directed Commissioners of Police in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to take preventive measures, investigate reported incidents and ensure that anyone found culpable is arrested and prosecuted.
The police also warned that political sponsors and individuals who recruit, encourage or facilitate the destruction of campaign materials would be held accountable where evidence establishes their involvement.
The Force stressed that all political parties and candidates, regardless of their affiliations or status, are entitled to equal protection under the law.
It urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct their activities peacefully and respect the rights of others, warning that political intolerance, intimidation and criminal conduct would not be tolerated.
The police further cautioned against allowing political thugs and troublemakers to turn the country’s political environment into a theatre of lawlessness.
The warning comes as political parties and prospective candidates intensify preparations and mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
