Police Rescue Abducted Woman From Kidnappers in Edo
The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the rescue of an abducted woman during a coordinated bush-combing operation carried out by its operatives in Igbanke, Orhionmwon Local Government Area, in collaboration with local security outfits.
The Command’s spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, noting that the victim, identified as Mrs. Vivian George, 57, was rescued unhurt and reunited with her family after a swift response by security forces.
According to the statement, the incident occurred on May 16, 2026, when the victim and her 18-year-old son, Chinedu George, were attacked by suspected kidnappers while on their way to their farm at Ottah Community in Igbanke.
Chinedu reportedly escaped from the scene and later alerted the police, prompting an immediate rescue operation.
“Upon receipt of the report, operatives of the Division immediately mobilised detectives alongside members of the Edo State Security Corps (ESSC) and local hunters into the forest on a rescue operation,” the statement read.
During the search operation, the security team reportedly engaged the suspected kidnappers in a gun duel inside the forest. The suspects were said to have fled with gunshot injuries, abandoning the victim at the scene.
The police confirmed that the rescued woman was found unharmed and was promptly taken to safety for medical evaluation before being reunited with her family.
Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, commended the operatives and collaborating local security groups for their bravery, swift response, and effective coordination during the operation.
He reiterated the command’s commitment to intensifying efforts against kidnapping, armed robbery, and other violent crimes across the state.
Agbonika also urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible intelligence, stressing that community cooperation remains critical in the fight against criminal activities.
The police further assured that efforts were ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects, who are believed to have sustained injuries during the exchange of fire, and bring them to justice.
