Police Arrest UNICROSS Student Over Viral Shooting Video
Police in Cross River have arrested a 24-year-old UNICROSS student in connection with a viral video allegedly showing suspected cult members firing shots from a moving vehicle in Calabar.
The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old student of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Emmanuel Ejim, over a viral video allegedly showing gunfire from a moving vehicle in Calabar.
The video, which circulated in the early hours of September 17, reportedly showed suspected cult members firing shots sporadically from a moving vehicle within the Calabar metropolis.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Calabar on Saturday.
According to the statement, Commissioner of Police Ajo Geoffrey Ordue directed the immediate identification and arrest of those involved after the video went viral.
At about 11:30 p.m. on September 17, operatives of the Violence Crime Response Unit, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, commenced an intelligence-led operation to track the vehicle captured in the footage.
The driver of the vehicle was arrested first, and information obtained from him reportedly led detectives to a hotel in Calabar, where Ejim was arrested.
Police said preliminary investigation identified Ejim as the key suspect and that he allegedly identified himself as a leader of the Vikings Confraternity.
The Command further alleged that Ejim admitted to being the person seen firing the shots in the video. He reportedly told investigators that he had participated in a sign-out activity on the day of the incident and that another suspected member of the group handed him the pistol allegedly used.
The police said efforts had been intensified to identify and arrest other persons connected with the incident, while investigation continues into how the firearm was obtained and the circumstances surrounding the movement of the vehicle.
The Commissioner of Police directed a thorough investigation and warned that the unlawful discharge of firearms in public places posed a serious security threat.
The Command also urged residents to report suspicious activities, possession of firearms and cult-related movements to the police as investigation progresses.
