Police Arrest Two Over Killing of Kano Political Commentator

The Kano State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the killing of social media political commentator Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu at his residence in Gaida, Kumbotso Local Government Area of the state.

The suspects were arrested following an intelligence-driven operation conducted by police tactical units in collaboration with community stakeholders.

Police spokesman, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the suspects were in custody and undergoing interrogation.

He said statements were being obtained from the suspects while forensic procedures were ongoing to establish the circumstances and motive behind the attack.

Dan Shagamu was found dead at his residence after being attacked by unknown assailants. His body was reportedly discovered in a pool of blood.

The commentator, who operated under the name Dan-Shagamu International, was known for his social media commentary on political, religious and community issues.

Reports indicated that he had previously raised concerns over threats to his life, including alleged threats from people in his neighbourhood.

The killing has generated reactions from political figures and rights groups, with Amnesty International Nigeria calling for a thorough investigation and prosecution of anyone found responsible.

Former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, also condemned the killing and called for a comprehensive investigation to establish those responsible.

He urged the authorities to protect opposition voices and uphold freedom of expression, while appealing for calm as investigations continue.

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has also directed security agencies to identify, arrest and prosecute the perpetrators, describing the killing as shocking and unacceptable.
