Police Arrest Three Over Alleged Torture, Death of Imo Varsity Student
Imo Police have arrested three FUTO students over the death of a 21-year-old undergraduate allegedly tortured after being accused of stealing ₦13,500, with investigations ongoing into the incident.
The Imo State Police Command has arrested three students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) in connection with the death of a 21-year-old undergraduate, Chinedu Christogonus. Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim was allegedly tortured after being accused of stealing ₦13,500.
According to police authorities, the suspects, Chukwuemeka Benedict, Kelechi Ikenna, and Obioma Anastasia , are all final-year students of the institution. Investigators said the victim was allegedly assaulted by members of a campus security group before his condition reportedly worsened.
Police spokesperson Henry Okoye stated that the victim was later taken for medical attention but was confirmed dead, prompting a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The suspects are currently in police custody while detectives continue gathering evidence and taking statements from witnesses linked to the case. Authorities have assured that anyone found culpable will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The incident has generated concern within the university community, with renewed calls for proper handling of disciplinary matters and stronger measures to prevent unlawful punishment or violence among students.
