Police Arrest 26-Year-Old Suspect Over Anambra Nursing Student’s Murder
Police arrest 26-year-old suspect over Vivian Chilaka’s murder, while landlord is cleared after further investigation.
The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Kosisochukwu Edward Ibekwe, in connection with the murder of 23-year-old nursing student, Vivian Chilaka, in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area.
Chilaka was killed on June 14, 2026, in an incident that generated widespread concern in the community and initially led to suspicion being directed at her landlord.
The police said Ibekwe was arrested on September 4 following credible and actionable information received by investigators.
Preliminary investigation, according to the command, showed that the suspect allegedly gained access to the building by climbing a fence with the aid of a ladder. He allegedly entered the victim’s residence with the initial intention of sexually assaulting her.
The police said a struggle subsequently occurred between Ibekwe and Chilaka. During the alleged struggle, he reportedly used a knife to stab the nursing student, resulting in her death.
The suspect is currently in police custody as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the killing and determine whether he may have been involved in other criminal incidents.
The police also said the suspect had allegedly made revelations linking him to other similar incidents within the community. Those claims, however, are still being investigated and must be corroborated before any further conclusions can be reached.
The command also cleared Chilaka’s landlord, who had earlier been suspected in connection with the murder. Police urged members of the public to disregard the earlier suspicion against him following developments in the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Nnanna Ama, commended residents of Alor for their cooperation, patience and support during the investigation.
Ama particularly praised community members who provided information that assisted the police in making the breakthrough.
The police command said it would continue to pursue credible leads and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice according to the law.
The command urged residents to continue providing timely information about suspicious activities while avoiding unverified allegations against individuals.
The development provides a major breakthrough in efforts to resolve the case and reassure residents seeking justice.
The suspect remains in custody while investigations continue.
