Plateau Varsity Lecturers Declare Indefinite Strike Over Unmet Demands
Lecturers at Plateau State University, Bokkos, have declared an indefinite strike over what they described as the university management’s failure to address their six-point demands. The lecturers are demanding pension scheme implementation, payment of wage and salary arrears, improved staff accommodation, better campus security and an end to alleged intimidation of union leaders.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Plateau State University, Bokkos chapter, has declared an indefinite strike over the alleged failure of the university administration to address its outstanding demands.
The union announced the industrial action on Wednesday after its Congress meeting, following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university management on Aug. 11.
In a statement signed by the ASUU-PLASU Chairperson, Vincent Choji, and Secretary, Lomka Kopdiya, the lecturers said their six-point charter of demands remained unresolved despite the expiration of the ultimatum.
Among their demands is the commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme and full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, including payment of arrears dating back to Jan. 1, 2026.
The union also demanded the payment of 22 months’ arrears of the 25/35 per cent wage award.
Other demands include the provision of safe and secure staff quarters, construction of trenches around the university’s perimeter fence and an end to what the union described as intimidation of union leaders.
The lecturers said the university management had failed to satisfactorily address the substance of all six demands despite previous engagements.
Following approval from the ASUU National Executive Council, the university chapter resolved to commence the industrial action.
The union consequently directed all its members to suspend academic activities until further notice.
The strike is expected to affect teaching and other academic activities at Plateau State University as the lecturers press for the resolution of the outstanding issues.
