The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has asked the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to release his academic records following a legal action seeking access to his university credentials.

Obi, in a statement on Tuesday, said he had no objection to the release of his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, which he said was awarded by the university in 1984, alongside other records relating to his admission and studies.

He urged the university to make his certificates and other official documents available upon legitimate request and within the limits permitted by law.

The former Anambra State governor said he also had no objection to other educational institutions he attended in Nigeria and abroad releasing his academic records in accordance with applicable laws and procedures.

Obi said transparency and accountability were particularly important for individuals seeking public office, but stressed that scrutiny should be conducted fairly and lawfully.

He said he welcomed legitimate public interest in his background, qualifications and record, adding that he was prepared to undergo the level of scrutiny reasonably expected of anyone seeking the presidency.

The NDC candidate also challenged other presidential aspirants to make their educational qualifications and relevant records available for public scrutiny.

He said such disclosure should be regarded as an opportunity to strengthen public confidence, promote accountability and rebuild Nigerians’ trust in political leaders.

The development followed three suits filed by Labour Party chieftain Abayomi Arabambi against WAEC, UNN and the National Youth Service Corps, seeking access to official records concerning certificates allegedly issued to Obi. The UNN suit, filed on September 9, is marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2144/2026.
