The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has urged politicians contesting the 2027 general election to avoid making campaign promises they would be unable to fulfil if elected.

Obi made the call during a town hall meeting with NDC members and supporters in Kaduna State, where he advocated issue-based campaigns focused on the challenges facing Nigerians.

The former Anambra State governor said political campaigns should be driven by the demands and concerns of citizens rather than rhetoric, urging candidates to engage directly with communities and address issues affecting their livelihoods.

He said politicians should present realistic programmes and policies that could be implemented after assuming office, rather than making promises aimed solely at winning votes.

Obi also spoke about his proposed approach to governance, saying a president should maintain close contact with citizens and visit communities facing insecurity and other challenges.

He pledged that, if elected, he would spend his annual holidays in Nigeria rather than abroad, arguing that the President should use such periods to visit different parts of the country and interact with citizens.

At the meeting, NDC Vice-Presidential Candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso urged Nigerians to participate actively in the electoral process.

Party members and supporters also used the town hall meeting to raise issues concerning the political and socio-economic development of the country.

The Kaduna engagement forms part of the NDC’s grassroots activities ahead of the 2027 general election and its efforts to communicate its political agenda to voters.
