Pepsi’s Yellow Bottle Caps Spark Consumer Concerns Over Product Authenticity
Seven-Up Bottling Company has faced criticism after introducing yellow caps on Pepsi and other beverages without prior public notice, prompting consumers to question whether the products are genuine. The company has assured customers that the drinks retain their original contents and taste.
Seven-Up Bottling Company has come under criticism from consumers following the introduction of bright yellow caps on plastic bottles of Pepsi and other beverages, with some buyers expressing concerns about the authenticity of the products.
The packaging change affects Pepsi, Mirinda, 7UP, Teem and Supa Komando. However, the appearance of the new caps in the market before a comprehensive public announcement prompted questions from consumers who were accustomed to the brands’ previous packaging.
The issue gained attention on October 13 after a LinkedIn user, Okafor Gambo, shared a photograph of a Pepsi bottle with a yellow cap and asked the company to confirm whether the change was official.
Gambo said he had seen the product being sold publicly and questioned why consumers had not been informed beforehand.
Responding on October 14, Seven-Up Bottling Company explained that the yellow caps were part of a new initiative covering its plastic-bottled beverages. It assured customers that the products contained the same drinks with their original taste, describing the new caps as a change in appearance.
The company later published a statement on LinkedIn, explaining that the packaging update was intended to introduce a new way of engaging and surprising consumers. It promised to provide further details about the initiative.
Despite the clarification, some consumers criticised the company for communicating the change only after questions had been raised online.
One commenter, Nnamdi Gabriel, questioned why the company had waited until consumers called attention to the new packaging before explaining the change. Other users said advance notification would have helped protect consumer confidence and purchasing decisions.
Gambo also disclosed that he had contacted the company privately but received no response before making his concerns public.
Another consumer, Raphael Echiye, said he and four other people had declined to buy the yellow-capped Pepsi because they were unsure whether it was genuine. He urged the company’s marketing team to improve its communication with customers.
Concerns were also raised on social media platforms, including X and Facebook. Some consumers said the unfamiliar packaging had made them suspicious, with one Facebook user recounting how a person had asked them to return four packs of the drink because of the yellow caps.
Pepsi Nigeria responded to questions on X by confirming that the yellow-capped bottles contained the same product and encouraging consumers to watch for further announcements.
The episode has highlighted the importance of communicating packaging changes before products reach the market, particularly in an environment where concerns about counterfeit consumer goods remain widespread.
Although the company has assured consumers that the drinks remain unchanged, the delayed explanation has prompted calls for more proactive communication to prevent confusion and maintain trust in established brands.
