PDP Faction Denies Plans to Make Jonathan 2027 Presidential Candidate
A PDP faction denied reports of plans to endorse former President Goodluck Jonathan for 2027, calling the claims false, unauthorised, and urging security agencies to investigate their source.
A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party has dismissed reports claiming it planned a convention to endorse former President Goodluck Jonathan as its 2027 presidential candidate, describing the claims as false and unauthorised.
In a statement on Friday, PDP National Publicity Secretary Jungudo Mohammed said no such convention or endorsement had been approved by any recognised organ of the party.
The faction also called on security agencies to investigate those behind the reports, alleging that they were intended to create political tension and confusion.
The controversy followed claims that a breakaway Interim National Working Committee led by Tanimu Turaki planned a weekend convention in Abuja to endorse Jonathan.
The party insisted it had already concluded its official primary elections for all elective positions, including the presidency, in line with electoral guidelines and the party constitution.
“The Party wishes to categorically state that no such convention, meeting, or process has been scheduled or endorsed,” the statement read.
It also urged Jonathan to publicly distance himself from the reports to protect his reputation and the integrity of the democratic process.
The PDP further warned against what it described as attempts to drag the party into disrepute through misinformation and unauthorised political activities.
