Patience Ozokwor Breaks Silence on Missing Olu Jacobs' Funeral
Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor has revealed why she was absent from the burial of legendary actor Olu Jacobs, explaining that contractual obligations in Ghana kept her away. In an emotional Instagram tribute, "Mama G" said she would have "given anything" to be there, as tributes poured in from Chiwetalu Agu, Pete Edochie, Rita Dominic, and Peter Obi for the late icon.
Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor, popularly known as Mama G, has opened up about her absence from the burial of legendary actor Olu Jacobs, revealing that contractual obligations in Ghana prevented her from travelling to Nigeria to pay her final respects.
Jacobs, one of the most distinguished figures in the history of Nigerian cinema, was laid to rest on Friday, October 2, 2026, at a funeral service held at the Freedom Centre in Lekki, Lagos. The ceremony drew family members, fellow actors, friends, and dignitaries from across the Nigerian film industry who gathered to honour the iconic star. Ozokwor, however, was not among those present. Currently in Ghana for work, the actress took to her Instagram page on the day of the funeral to explain her absence and express her grief.
In a post that captured the depth of her sorrow, Ozokwor made clear that missing such a significant moment weighed heavily on her, saying she would have done whatever it took to be there. "It hurts my heart that I am not physically present in Nigeria today to pay my last respects to the great legend, Olu Jacobs," she wrote. "I would give anything to be there right now, but contractual obligations will not allow me to. My heart and thoughts are with you all." She went on to pray for a peaceful ceremony and expressed hope that the late actor's contributions to Nigerian cinema would endure long after his passing. "I pray everything goes peacefully and that his remarkable legacy lives on. Though I may not be there in person, please know that I am with you all in spirit," she added.
Ozokwor closed her tribute with a warm and deeply personal farewell, drawing on both English and Igbo to send off her colleague. "Rest well, great legend. Your legacy will forever remain. Go well, great legend. Ga nke Oma. Until we meet to part no more," she wrote. The phrase "Ga nke Oma," which translates to "go well" in Igbo, was a poignant final salute to a man she described as a great legend and a towering figure in the industry.
The explanation for her absence has drawn mixed reactions, particularly from fans in Ghana, where Ozokwor has been filming. Some Ghanaians questioned why she would prioritise a movie production over the funeral of such a revered figure, with some taking to social media to express disappointment. Others, however, understood the reality of contractual commitments in the entertainment industry, where actors are often bound by agreements that make it difficult to leave a production mid-shoot. Ozokwor's decision to publicly explain her absence, rather than remain silent, was widely seen as an attempt to address the speculation and show respect for Jacobs and his family.
The funeral itself was a solemn and star-studded affair that reflected the scale of Jacobs' influence on generations of actors and filmmakers. Several of his colleagues paid emotional tributes. Actor Chiwetalu Agu, mourning Jacobs, described him as more than an actor, calling him a giant of the Nigerian film industry and saying words failed him as he came to terms with the death. NDC Presidential aspirant Peter Obi said he was saddened by Jacobs' death, describing the late actor as an embodiment of the excellence of the Nigerian spirit and noting his contributions to the film and creative industry. Obi said Jacobs' life demonstrated "the power of talent, discipline, professionalism, and dedication to one's craft."
Actress Rita Dominic described Jacobs as an icon and a legend, calling him a gift to the film industry. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have worked alongside him, adding that she was privileged to learn from him and experience his greatness firsthand. Veteran actor Pete Edochie also paid tribute, describing Jacobs as his brother. Edochie said Jacobs "fought like a man and a soldier," while describing him as a humorous personality and a peaceful colleague whose absence would be deeply felt.
For Ozokwor, the pain of missing the funeral was compounded by the knowledge that she could not be there to share in the collective grief of her colleagues and to celebrate the life of a man she had worked with and admired. Her tribute, though delivered from afar, was a testament to the enduring bonds of the Nollywood community and the respect that Jacobs commanded across the industry. As the curtain falls on the farewell period for one of Nigeria's most distinguished actors, Ozokwor's words serve as a reminder that even in absence, the bonds of respect and admiration remain unbroken.
