Oyo Elders Urge Peaceful Campaigns Ahead of 2027 Elections
Oyo State elders have urged politicians and their supporters to conduct peaceful campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections, warning against actions that could trigger violence and destabilise the state.
Elders in Oyo State have appealed to politicians, political parties and their supporters to ensure peaceful campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The elders urged political actors to prioritise the peace and development of the state above personal and partisan interests.
They warned against inflammatory statements, intimidation and other actions capable of creating tension or violence during the electioneering period.
The call comes amid growing political activities in the state as parties and aspirants intensify preparations for the 2027 elections.
The Inter-Party Advisory Council in Oyo had similarly cautioned politicians and their supporters against actions capable of plunging the state into violence, warning against a repeat of the political violence associated with the old Western Region. (Punch Newspapers)
The council had urged politicians to compete with ideas rather than violence, while calling on security agencies to remain vigilant and neutral.
The elders also urged political parties to encourage issue-based campaigns and allow candidates to present their programmes to voters without resorting to personal attacks.
They stressed the need for politicians to respect traditional institutions and community leaders, saying their involvement should help promote peace and stability.
The elders called on residents, particularly youths, not to allow themselves to be used to cause violence during campaigns or elections.
They urged security agencies, religious leaders, traditional rulers and civil society organisations to work together to promote peaceful participation throughout the electoral process.
The elders said the success of the 2027 elections would depend largely on the willingness of political actors and their supporters to respect democratic values and maintain peace.
