Otu Condemns Attack on Obi’s Convoy, Orders Arrests
Cross River Governor Bassey Otu condemns the attack on Peter Obi’s convoy in Calabar and directs security agencies to arrest those responsible.
Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has condemned the attack on the convoy of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), in Calabar, directing security agencies to identify and arrest everyone involved.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, around Watt Market Roundabout, as Obi’s convoy returned from the palace of the Obong of Calabar to Metropolitan Hotel, where the party was scheduled to hold a presidential town hall meeting.
According to the police, suspected hoodlums armed with machetes and sticks emerged from the Calabar Road and Clerks Alley axis and attacked vehicles in the convoy, smashing some windshields.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Linus Obogo, Otu expressed sympathy with Obi and members of his entourage, describing the incident as disturbing and unacceptable.
The governor said the attack contradicted Cross River State’s reputation for peace, hospitality and mutual respect, stressing that political actors must be able to engage with voters without intimidation.
He reaffirmed his administration’s position against political violence and criminality, regardless of party affiliation, and directed security agencies to ensure that those responsible were brought to justice.
Meanwhile, the Cross River State Police Command confirmed the arrest of a 27-year-old suspect, identified as Victor Edet Yellow Duke, in connection with the incident.
The police said officers intervened to disperse the attackers and transferred the suspect to the State Police Headquarters for investigation. Other suspected participants were said to have fled.
The Commissioner of Police, Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, has ordered a thorough investigation to identify and apprehend other suspects and establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The police clarified that the arrest does not establish the suspect’s guilt, noting that he remains entitled to the presumption of innocence pending the conclusion of investigations and any court proceedings.
The command also assured political parties, candidates and their supporters of equal security protection across the state.
