Osun Shooting: Police Recover Another Corpse, Slain Accord Chieftain Buried
Police recover a second corpse after Ile-Ife motor park shooting as slain Accord chieftain Olalekan Oyeyemi is buried in Osogbo.
The Osun State Police Command has recovered another corpse from the Mayfair Motor Park in Ile-Ife following a deadly shooting that claimed the life of Accord Party chieftain Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Emir Ajagungbade.
The latest discovery brings the number of people confirmed dead in connection with the incident to two.
Oyeyemi was shot dead on Sunday during a clash at the motor park amid a dispute involving factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers.
Following the incident, Governor Ademola Adeleke directed the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, to identify and arrest those responsible for the killing.
The governor also ordered the immediate closure of motor parks in the state and directed rival NURTW factions to vacate the parks while security agencies restored order.
Police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi said the newly recovered corpse had been deposited at a morgue, while the investigation had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further inquiry.
Ojelabi urged anyone mentioned or implicated in the incident to report to the nearest police station rather than attempting to defend themselves on social media.
He said the police commissioner had assured that everyone found to have participated in the violence would be apprehended and prosecuted, regardless of their status.
Meanwhile, the remains of Oyeyemi were buried at his newly completed residence in the Agunbelewo area of Osogbo.
The burial was conducted according to traditional rites and was attended by members of his family, close associates and traditional priests.
Tension had earlier risen at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital in Osogbo when associates of the deceased gathered to retrieve his remains from the morgue.
Reports said two hospital workers were attacked after one of them was accused of recording members of the gathering with his phone. Police later arrived at the hospital to restore order.
Oyeyemi’s killing has been linked to tensions surrounding leadership of the NURTW in Osun, with conflicting accounts emerging over attempts to resolve the dispute.
The state Commissioner for Transportation, Sesan Oyedele, denied claims that he had endorsed Oyeyemi as the next state chairman of the transport union.
He said Oyeyemi and other transport union leaders had visited him to seek his support for their preferred candidate, but that no formal endorsement had been made before the shooting.
The police investigation is continuing as authorities seek to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and identify all those responsible for the violence.
