Osun Poll: Dangote, Akpabio Called Me to Delete Tweets — Davido
Davido says Akpabio and Dangote called him during Osun poll, asking him to delete social media updates.
Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has revealed that Senate President Godswill Akpabio and billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote contacted him during the Osun State governorship election and asked him to delete posts about the exercise.
Davido made the disclosure during an interview with News Central TV on Tuesday, while discussing his involvement in monitoring developments during the election.
The singer claimed that political opponents deployed huge financial resources in an attempt to influence the outcome of the election, alleging that more than ₦110 billion in cash was brought into Osun State.
“I just confirmed today. They spent N110 billion,” Davido said, adding that information was being provided to his team by an insider.
He argued that if such alleged spending had succeeded, it could have established a dangerous model for future elections in Nigeria, where violence and financial inducements could become dominant features.
Davido said his family’s campaign strategy did not involve distributing money to voters on election day, insisting that they relied on citizens to protect their votes.
“We didn’t spend a dime on election day. All we could do was just pray that these people take their money and vote for us,” he said.
The singer also claimed that some residents confronted individuals allegedly attempting to interfere with ballot materials.
“It got to a point where it was the Osun people that were beating the people that were trying to seize ballots. People are tired,” he added.
Davido further disclosed that he received calls from prominent figures as election results were being collated, with appeals allegedly made for him to delete his social media updates.
He said he was told that the Senate President was attempting to contact the collation centre and that he was also personally asked to remove his posts.
“I can’t delete anything. Uncle Aliko called me too. I said, ‘Uncle, I’m not deleting until the INEC announcement,’” Davido said.
The singer maintained that the victory of his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, demonstrated the importance of popular support in electoral politics.
“My uncle should be an example to all other government officials and governors. When you stand by the people, the people will stand by you,” he said.
Davido’s involvement in Osun politics is closely linked to his family’s political history in the state.
His late uncle, Senator Isiaka Adeleke, was the first civilian governor of Osun State, serving in 1992, while his other uncle, Ademola Adeleke, is the incumbent governor.
The singer’s comments add to the political debate surrounding the Osun election and allegations of financial influence and attempts to manipulate the electoral process.
