Osun Police Confirm Shooting Amid Ikire Garage Takeover

The Osun State Police Command has confirmed reports of shootings at the Naira and Kobo Garage in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area of the state.

The incident reportedly occurred amid a dispute over control of the motor park, with reports alleging that five people were killed during the confrontation.

However, the police said they had not yet confirmed the reported casualties.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed that shootings occurred in the area but said officers were still gathering information about the incident.

“We are still gathering the information as to what is happening there. I can only confirm there were shootings around that area,” Ojelabi said.

The development has raised concerns among residents and transport operators in Ikire, as details surrounding the reported confrontation remained unclear.

The alleged dispute is said to be connected to the control of the Naira and Kobo Garage, a motor park serving commuters and commercial transport operators in the community.

While reports of multiple deaths have circulated, the police command urged caution pending the completion of its preliminary assessment of the situation.

Security personnel are expected to intensify monitoring around the garage and other strategic locations in Ikire to prevent further escalation.

The command is also expected to provide additional details once officers on the ground complete their assessment and establish the circumstances surrounding the shootings.

The incident comes amid recurring concerns over disputes involving control of motor parks in parts of Nigeria, which can sometimes trigger confrontations between rival groups and disrupt commercial activities.

Residents and transport operators in the affected area are expected to await further clarification from the police regarding the reported casualties and the events that led to the shooting.

As of the time of the police confirmation, the command had verified only that shootings occurred around the Naira and Kobo Garage area, while investigations into the incident were ongoing.
