Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen is facing a race against time to recover from a groin injury after Galatasaray confirmed the extent of the problem ahead of their Champions League campaign.

Osimhen sustained the injury during Galatasaray’s 3-2 victory over Istanbul Basaksehir on Friday, September 4. The forward scored his side’s opening goal before being substituted in the 33rd minute after experiencing discomfort.

Galatasaray subsequently carried out advanced medical examinations, including an MRI scan, to determine the severity of the injury. The club confirmed that Osimhen suffered a moderate-to-severe strain with bleeding in the right adductor muscle group.

The injury is expected to keep the Nigerian forward out for approximately two to three weeks, meaning he is unlikely to feature when Galatasaray travel to Portugal to face Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The development is a setback for Osimhen, who had hoped to lead Galatasaray’s attack in Europe.

Before leaving the field against Basaksehir, Osimhen had already made an impact by producing a fine finish to put Galatasaray ahead. His early substitution, however, immediately raised concerns about his availability for the Champions League.

Osimhen had initially offered some optimism after the match, saying he did not want to risk himself and would like to play against Sporting if the coach considered him fit. He stressed that the final decision would depend on the medical staff.

However, the subsequent examination has provided a clearer picture of the injury and reduced the likelihood of an immediate return.

The club will continue treatment while monitoring his recovery before determining when he can return.

The setback could also affect Nigeria’s preparations for upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

Osimhen remains a crucial figure for both Galatasaray and Nigeria. His goalscoring form and importance to the Turkish champions make his recovery a major concern as the season enters an important phase.

For now, the priority is completing treatment and ensuring the injury heals properly before he resumes competitive football. His return will depend on how quickly the muscle heals and whether he can resume training without discomfort safely.
