Only Opposition Coalition Can Defeat Tinubu In 2027 — Kenneth Okonkwo

Kenneth Okonkwo, spokesperson for the presidential campaign of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has said an opposition coalition remains the only realistic pathway to defeating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Okonkwo made the remarks during an interview while discussing the political realignment and opposition efforts ahead of the 2027 elections.

He argued that no individual opposition candidate could defeat Tinubu alone, stressing that opposition parties would need to consolidate their political strength and support behind a single candidate.

According to him, the opposition’s chances would be weakened if major contenders entered the election separately and divided votes among themselves.

Okonkwo specifically dismissed the possibility of Peter Obi defeating Tinubu without a broader alliance. Obi is currently the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, while former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso is his running mate.

He argued that Obi would face significant challenges securing sufficient support across northern Nigeria if he contested without the backing of a wider opposition coalition.

Okonkwo also questioned the political strength of the proposed Obi-Kwankwaso ticket, claiming that Kwankwaso no longer possessed the influence required to significantly strengthen the ticket, including in Kano State.

“Coalition is the only way out,” Okonkwo said, arguing that opposition politicians needed to work together rather than allow competing candidates to split the electorate.

His comments come amid continuing efforts by opposition figures to consolidate political forces ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.

The opposition coalition has previously faced difficulties, particularly after major political figures emerged as candidates under different political platforms. However, efforts to bring them together have continued as the election approaches.

Okonkwo has remained a prominent advocate of opposition cooperation. He previously argued that no single candidate could confidently defeat Tinubu because winning a presidential election in Nigeria requires not only popular support but also strong political structures capable of protecting the outcome.

He has also been associated with efforts to build the African Democratic Congress as a platform for opposition forces seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress.

With the 2027 presidential election approaching, the question of whether opposition parties can agree on one candidate remains one of the central issues shaping Nigeria’s political landscape.

Okonkwo maintained that a united opposition would provide the strongest challenge to Tinubu, while a divided field could improve the incumbent’s prospects of securing another term.
