One person has been killed and six others wounded in a shooting at a Halloween store in Fairfield, California, United States, police have said.
The shooting occurred shortly before 8:30 p.m. on Friday at a Spirit Halloween store inside the Solano Town Center shopping mall, about 76 kilometres northeast of San Francisco.
Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall said officers responded to reports of gunfire and confirmed that seven people had sustained gunshot wounds. One victim later died, while the six others were taken to nearby hospitals.
At least three of the surviving victims were reported to be in critical condition.
Marshall said the investigation was ongoing, adding that authorities had yet to identify the suspect or determine whether more than one person was involved.
“There is still a very active crime scene and investigation going on right now,” he said during a late-night briefing.
Police had not released the identities of the victims or provided details about what led to the shooting.
Officers were interviewing witnesses and reviewing available surveillance footage as part of efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The shooting took place hours before Halloween celebrations began across the United States on Saturday, October 31.
Authorities said there was no immediate indication of a wider threat to the public outside the mall. The investigation remains ongoing.
