Oluremi Tinubu Unveils National Community Food Bank for South-East in Anambra
First Lady launches regional food intervention targeting vulnerable women and children as part of Renewed Hope Initiative’s nutrition drive.
First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has launched the National Community Food Bank Programme for the South-East in Anambra State, expanding the Federal Government’s intervention to improve nutrition and food security among vulnerable Nigerians.
The programme, launched in Anambra as the sixth zonal rollout, is designed to support pregnant women, lactating mothers and children under six, particularly those identified as nutritionally vulnerable.
Ahead of the launch, screening, verification and enrolment of prospective beneficiaries began across designated healthcare facilities serving Anambra’s three senatorial zones.
The screening centres include the Maternal and Child Health Centre in Amawbia for Anambra Central, Aku Ezinifite Primary Health Centre in Aguata for Anambra South, and the Basic Primary Health Centre in Onitsha North for Anambra North.
Officials said the exercise was aimed at identifying children who are moderately malnourished as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women who require nutritional support.
The National Community Food Bank Programme is being implemented under the Renewed Hope Initiative, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency and the Bank of Agriculture.
The initiative was launched nationally in Abuja on April 2, 2026, and has progressively been rolled out across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.
With the South-East launch in Anambra, implementation is expected to extend to communities across the country, covering all 774 local government areas in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The programme provides food support and nutrition education, with the broader objective of improving maternal and child nutrition and reducing vulnerability among households facing food insecurity.
During her Anambra visit, Mrs Tinubu is also scheduled to commission a modern ICT Centre at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, designed to strengthen digital skills among students in Anambra and the wider South-East.
The centre will provide training opportunities in areas including software development, data analysis, digital marketing and other emerging digital skills.
The First Lady’s visit also includes the flag-off of an empowerment programme expected to benefit 5,000 people across Anambra’s 21 local government areas through business grants, vocational tools and equipment for agriculture, agro-processing, beauty care and small-scale enterprises.
The initiatives are expected to strengthen collaboration between the Federal and Anambra State governments in addressing poverty, food insecurity, youth unemployment and limited access to economic opportunities.
