Ogun Urges Residents to Protect Grassroots Infrastructure
The Ogun State Government has urged residents and Community Development Associations to take ownership of infrastructure provided by the government, particularly by preventing vandalism, indiscriminate waste disposal and activities that could damage public facilities. The government said community participation was essential to preserving infrastructure and ensuring that development projects deliver lasting benefits.
The Ogun State Government has urged residents to take greater responsibility for protecting infrastructure provided in their communities.
The government said grassroots participation was essential to ensuring that public infrastructure remained functional and continued to serve residents for a long period.
It called on Community Development Associations, traditional institutions and other community stakeholders to monitor public facilities and promptly report vandalism, illegal activities and other actions capable of damaging them.
The government also urged residents to avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse on roads and drainage channels, as well as the illegal diversion of wastewater onto roads.
It stressed that blocked drainage channels could undermine road infrastructure, particularly during the rainy season, and increase the risk of flooding.
The government said residents should regard public infrastructure as community assets and work with relevant authorities to preserve them.
The call comes amid growing concerns over vandalism and deterioration of infrastructure across communities, with the Transmission Company of Nigeria recently urging residents in Ogun to help protect power installations from vandals.
The state government maintained that government alone could not monitor every facility across the state, making community involvement crucial to protecting infrastructure.
It therefore encouraged residents to cooperate with government agencies and security personnel by providing timely information on suspicious activities and helping to prevent the destruction or misuse of public facilities.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to infrastructure development and urged residents to complement its efforts by ensuring that completed projects are properly maintained.
