Ogun Ruling House Warns Against Denial Of Right To Produce Next Awujale

Leaders of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House have warned against attempts to prevent the family from producing the next Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland.

The leaders spoke on Saturday after an enlarged meeting of princes and princesses of the ruling house at Ile Nla (Agunsebi), Ijebu-Ode, where members were briefed on the stalled succession process and ongoing legal action.

Chairman of the ruling house, Otunba Abdulateef Owoyemi, said the meeting demonstrated the unity of the family, adding that members endorsed decisions taken by its leadership.

Owoyemi alleged that some individuals were working to frustrate the ruling house's efforts, warning that such actions could eventually be used to question its eligibility to produce the monarch.

The ruling house has instituted a suit against Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, nine Ijebu-Ode kingmakers and five other defendants, seeking orders compelling the conclusion of the selection process.

The suit, filed on August 21, 2026, is also asking the court to determine whether the state government had the legal authority to halt the Awujale nomination and selection process.

The claimants said they had completed their internal nomination process within the period prescribed by law and therefore fulfilled their statutory responsibility under Section 16 of the Ogun State Obas and Chiefs Law 2021.

A vacation judge, Justice A. A. Omoniyi, subsequently returned the case to the administrative judge for reassignment, citing his impending annual vacation and the urgency of the matter.

The Awujale stool became vacant in July 2025 following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona, who died aged 91 after 65 years on the throne.

The Ogun State Government halted the selection process in January 2026, citing petitions from security agencies and stakeholders, after an earlier suspension over procedural concerns.

A total of 95 aspirants, comprising 94 princes and one princess, had emerged from the ruling house's nomination process before the selection was halted.
