OECD Pledges Support For Nigeria’s Economic Reforms
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has pledged support for Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms by providing robust economic and investment data aimed at strengthening policy planning, investor confidence, and reform implementation.
The commitment was made during a meeting between senior OECD officials and President Bola Tinubu on Friday in Kigali, Rwanda, on the sidelines of the Africa CEO Forum 2026.
According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, discussions focused on possible areas of collaboration to support Nigeria’s reform agenda across key sectors including public finance, investment facilitation, trade competitiveness, MSME development, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and solid minerals.
The OECD Deputy Secretary-General, Frantisek Ruzicka, commended the Tinubu administration’s reform efforts and expressed readiness for deeper cooperation with Nigeria in advancing its economic transformation goals.
He noted that the OECD could serve as a strategic partner in strengthening institutional reforms and improving economic outcomes.
“We support and understand the pillars of your reforms. I think other leaders should learn from you, especially in improving public finances and working conditions. OECD can be partners with you on the ongoing reforms, particularly the priorities,” Ruzicka said.
The discussions also highlighted the need to improve investor confidence, address negative perceptions of Africa’s investment climate, and strengthen transparency and policy consistency to attract long-term capital inflows.
President Tinubu, in his remarks, stressed the importance of changing global narratives about Africa’s economic environment, saying accountability and discipline are essential for sustainable investment.
“Africa’s risk perception must change. Africa must be disciplined and accountable over various projects. We welcome a structured cooperation between Nigeria and OECD in support of ongoing reforms in Nigeria,” he said.
Both parties agreed on the importance of data-driven governance and international partnerships in accelerating Nigeria’s economic transformation and strengthening its position in the global investment space.
