Odegbami: Tinubu, NSC, Onyema and Gov. Uba Sani Signal "Genuine Revolution" for Nigerian Sports

Former Nigerian international and respected sports commentator, Dr Segun Odegbami, has said a series of recent developments across Nigerian sports point to the beginnings of what he described as a genuine sports revolution, driven by a rare convergence of presidential backing, institutional reform, and private and state-level gestures honouring the country's sporting history.

Writing in his latest column, Odegbami argued that recent events in Nigerian football and sports administration suggest the emergence of a new era, one he believes could extend beyond sport into the broader shape of the nation from 2027.

At the centre of this shift, according to Odegbami, is direct presidential involvement. He credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with kick-starting the process by directing that proper reforms take place within Nigerian sports, and backing that directive with financial commitment to see it through. Odegbami noted that this level of presidential interest in sports had not been witnessed since the era of the late Admiral Augustus Aikhomu, signalling to him that the current administration is serious about following through on its reform agenda.

On the institutional front, Odegbami commended the National Sports Commission (NSC) for what he described as proficient handling of the crisis situation within Nigerian football in recent months. He pointed specifically to the disbandment of the board of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), which he noted was carried out without triggering any significant public outcry or resultant crisis, a rare outcome for such a contentious administrative step. He further referenced a delegation the NSC led to FIFA's headquarters, which he said returned with an indication of goodwill from the embattled president of FIFA, though he cautioned that he hoped this signalled genuine clearance for Nigeria to carry out necessary football reforms without the risk of FIFA sanctions for third-party interference.

Odegbami expressed hope that the NSC would now move to establish a body of credible, neutral, and knowledgeable persons tasked with dismantling what he called the old, failed system and creating new instruments for football development in the country's best interest.

Beyond government and administrative action, Odegbami highlighted a significant gesture from the private sector. He disclosed that Dr Allen Onyema, Chairman of Air Peace, had approved reviving recognition for Nigeria's 1996 Olympic gold medal-winning football team, popularly known as the "Dream Team." According to Odegbami, the names of those Olympic heroes are set to be inscribed in gold on the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs' Sports Diplomacy Wall of Fame in Lagos, with an induction ceremony planned for October or November 2026. He noted the timing carries added significance, given that 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of Nigeria's leadership of the 1976 Olympic boycott, as well as the 30th anniversary of the country's celebrated 1996 Atlanta Olympic triumph. He added that two other prominent Nigerian sports figures, the late Super Eagles captain and manager Stephen Keshi, and athletics world record holder Tobi Amusan, are also set to be honoured on the same occasion.

Odegbami reserved particular praise for a development he described as the best sports news of the year: an intervention from Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani. According to Odegbami, Governor Sani has moved to complete a long-delayed promise made to members of Nigeria's 1996 Olympic "Dream Team" and their officials, who had originally been rewarded with plots of land in Kaduna by the state government of the time. Odegbami explained that, for reasons unclear, the land had never been properly documented or formally handed over to the players, until Governor Sani's administration recently completed the process three decades later.

Beyond the land issue, Odegbami highlighted a second major move by the Kaduna State Government: the return of full ownership of the historic Ahmadu Bello Stadium to the state. He explained that the stadium, built and opened in 1964 under the government of Northern Nigeria led by Sir Ahmadu Bello, carries deep historical significance for the region, but had been taken over by the federal government for renovation ahead of the 1999 FIFA U-17 World Championship hosted in Nigeria. According to Odegbami, that federal takeover of state stadia proved to be one of the worst decisions in the country's sporting history, with poorly managed renovation efforts, some carried out by Nigerian and Israeli contractors, ultimately damaging rather than preserving facilities including Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Liberty Stadium in Ibadan, and Township Stadium in Calabar, three venues he described as having once housed some of the best football facilities in Africa.

With Kaduna's stadium now returned to state control under Governor Sani, Odegbami called on the governors of Oyo and Cross River States to follow a similar path, securing the release of their respective stadia from the National Sports Commission and rebuilding them for the benefit of future generations and the broader reformation of Nigerian sports currently under way.

Taken together, Odegbami framed these developments, presidential commitment, NSC institutional reform, private-sector recognition of past sporting heroes, and state-level redemption of long-neglected promises and infrastructure, as evidence of what he called an emerging "conspiracy" of positive change across Nigerian sports, one he believes could mark a genuine turning point for a sector that has struggled for decades with mismanagement and neglect.
