Obi: Why I Can’t Step Down for Atiku

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has explained why he will not step down from the 2027 presidential race in favour of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Obi, who was the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, said his decision was informed by his conviction that Nigeria requires a new political direction and that candidates should be allowed to present their programmes to Nigerians.

His position comes amid renewed efforts by opposition figures to build a coalition capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 election.

Atiku and Obi have been at the centre of discussions over the possibility of an opposition alliance. Both politicians contested the 2023 presidential election, finishing behind Tinubu.

However, Obi has maintained that he should not be expected to abandon his political ambition simply to make way for Atiku.

The former Anambra State governor has continued to promote what he describes as a leadership approach focused on transforming Nigeria through investment in education, healthcare, production and human development.

His stance also comes as other opposition politicians continue to position themselves ahead of the 2027 election. The growing contest has increased pressure on opposition leaders to agree on a single candidate if they hope to present a united challenge to the APC.

Obi’s decision not to step down could therefore become an important factor in ongoing negotiations among opposition groups.

The former presidential candidate has repeatedly argued that Nigeria’s political problems require more than a change of political parties or personalities, stressing the need for competent leadership and a shift from consumption to production.

Meanwhile, Atiku remains committed to his presidential ambition, while other prominent opposition figures are also seeking a role in the emerging political arrangement.

With the 2027 election approaching, negotiations over alliances, presidential tickets and possible compromises are expected to intensify.

Obi’s latest position makes clear that any agreement involving him and Atiku will have to address the question of who should lead the opposition ticket rather than simply assume that one aspirant will withdraw for the other.
