Obi Takes Production Agenda to Delta, Says Nigeria Must Break Poverty Cycle
NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi says Nigeria must shift from consumption to production, create jobs and strengthen security to reduce poverty.
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi, has taken his production-driven economic agenda to Delta State, saying Nigeria must move away from excessive consumption to create jobs and reduce poverty.
Obi made the remarks on Thursday during the launch of the NDC campaign office in Asaba, where he joined the party’s Delta State governorship candidate, Deacon Chris Iyovwaye, other candidates, party leaders and supporters.
He said Nigeria’s economic challenges required a fundamental shift towards increased production, investment and enterprise.
According to him, the country must combine national unity with improved security, greater production and job creation to lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty.
Obi said the NDC’s message was centred on building a more secure and productive Nigeria capable of creating opportunities for its citizens.
He thanked Iyovwaye, other candidates, party leaders and members for their commitment to the party’s programme, while appreciating residents of Delta for the reception accorded him during his visit.
The former Anambra governor said the engagement in Delta provided another opportunity to communicate the party’s economic message directly to Nigerians and reaffirm its commitment to national development.
He said moving from a consumption-based economy to one driven by production would require greater investment in productive sectors and measures that enable businesses to expand and create employment.
Obi has similarly advocated a production-led economy during recent engagements outside the country, arguing that investment in education, healthcare and enterprise development would be critical to creating opportunities for young Nigerians.
He said Nigeria had the human and material resources required for economic transformation but needed policies that would encourage production and enterprise.
“A New Nigeria is Possible, and Nigeria will be OK,” Obi said at the Delta event.
