Obi Challenges Tinubu to Account for N15.8tn Subsidy Savings, $100bn Loans
Peter Obi has challenged President Bola Tinubu to explain how his administration utilised the N15.8tn generated from subsidy removal and more than $100bn in loans, demanding evidence of improvements in Nigerians’ living conditions.
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has challenged President Bola Tinubu to account for the N15.8tn reportedly generated from the removal of petrol subsidy and more than $100bn borrowed by his administration.
Obi made the demand in a statement posted on his X handle on Saturday, titled, “Good Day, Mr President: Nigerians Deserve Accountability.”
He urged Tinubu to visit more states across the country and explain how the resources available to his government had translated into tangible improvements in the lives of citizens.
The former Anambra State governor also questioned what the administration had achieved with increased tax revenues and additional government earnings, which it had reportedly said surpassed its target last year.
He asked the President to provide figures showing how many Nigerians had been lifted out of poverty, how many out-of-school children had returned to classrooms and how many functional primary healthcare centres had been established since the administration assumed office.
Obi also demanded an explanation of improvements in electricity supply, recalling Tinubu's earlier promise that Nigerians should not vote for him if he failed to fix the country's power challenges.
On security, the NDC candidate questioned what the government had done to protect Nigerians, arguing that the country remained among those facing severe terrorism threats.
His comments followed Tinubu's visit to Akwa Ibom State, where the President attended an All Progressives Congress campaign rally on Friday and criticised Obi over the erosion crisis in Anambra State during his tenure as governor.
Obi congratulated Tinubu on spending a night in a state outside Lagos and Abuja, expressing hope that the visit would encourage him to travel to the remaining 33 states and engage directly with citizens.
He maintained that Nigerians deserved clear answers on how public resources had been managed and what measurable benefits they had delivered.
The former governor said accountability, transparency and demonstrable improvements in citizens' welfare should guide the management of national resources.
