NUJ Seeks Probe of Kaduna Journalist’s Four-Year Sentence Over Facebook Post
The NUJ has called for an impartial investigation and fair trial for Kaduna journalist Farida Isiak following her controversial sentencing.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called for an impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrest and sentencing of Farida Isiak, a 23-year-old journalist with Nagarta Radio in Kaduna State, over a Facebook post criticising the police.
The union’s demand followed reports that Isiak was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment or a fine of ₦1.75 million for alleged defamation after publishing comments about the reported arrest and detention of her parents.
According to reports, the incident began with a dispute over ₦100 change from a charcoal sale involving Isiak’s mother and a neighbour. Her mother was reportedly arrested, while her father was also detained after visiting the police station to secure her release.
Isiak subsequently went to the police station and was accused of defamation over a Facebook post concerning the alleged treatment of her parents. She reportedly deleted the post and apologised.
The NUJ expressed concern about the circumstances of the proceedings, particularly questions surrounding due process, legal representation and the journalist’s right to a fair hearing.
The union called on the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police to ensure an impartial investigation into the incident, including the reported detention of Isiak’s parents.
It also urged the relevant judicial authorities to scrutinise the initial proceedings and ensure that the case was handled in accordance with the law.
The NUJ cited constitutional protections for freedom of expression, personal liberty and fair hearing, while acknowledging that journalists remain subject to the law.
It stressed, however, that allegations of defamation should be addressed through lawful procedures and should not undermine the rights of individuals or threaten press freedom.
In a significant development on Thursday, Isiak’s lawyer successfully challenged the initial proceedings. The court set aside the conviction, allowed her to enter a fresh plea and granted her bail. The case was adjourned until November 3, 2026.
The NUJ welcomed her release but maintained that the wider concerns surrounding the case required proper attention.
The union said it would continue monitoring the proceedings and urged authorities to ensure that the retrial was conducted transparently, without intimidation or prejudice.
It reaffirmed its commitment to defending press freedom and called on law enforcement agencies and judicial institutions to uphold due process and protect the fundamental rights of citizens.
