The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Jigawa State Command, has arrested a 35-year-old man, Rayyanu Ibrahim, over alleged vandalism and theft of armoured cables at the Birnin-Kudu Township Water Station.

The incident was reported at about 4am on Sunday, September 20, 2026, after suspected vandals allegedly damaged the facility and tampered with its electrical installations.

The NSCDC said its Birnin-Kudu Divisional Officer, CSC A. S. Adam, immediately mobilised personnel to investigate the incident.

Acting on credible information provided by the Birnin-Kudu Peace and Security Group, operatives arrested Ibrahim at about 11am on the same day.

The suspect, identified as a resident of Kurima in Birnin-Kudu, was reportedly found with an armoured cable suspected to have been removed from the affected water station.

The cable was recovered and kept as an exhibit as investigations continued.

According to the NSCDC, preliminary investigation showed that Ibrahim allegedly confessed to his involvement in the incident and disclosed information about other cases of armoured cable theft and vandalism within and outside Birnin-Kudu.

The suspect reportedly told investigators that stolen cables were being sold to scrap dealers.

The corps said it had expanded its investigation to identify and apprehend other individuals who may have been involved in the alleged criminal activities.

It also said the investigation would establish the full extent of the damage caused to the water station and losses incurred.

Jigawa State NSCDC Commandant, CC Muhammad Kabiru Ingawa, reaffirmed the corps’ commitment to safeguarding critical national assets and infrastructure across the state.

Ingawa urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around public utilities, government facilities and other critical infrastructure to the NSCDC or relevant security agencies.

The NSCDC said Ibrahim remains in custody while the investigation continues, adding that further action will be taken in accordance with extant laws.

Authorities urged members of the public to provide credible information that could assist security agencies in preventing further attacks on government facilities and essential public utilities.

The command said attacks on public utilities can disrupt essential services and negatively affect communities, urging residents to cooperate with security agencies by sharing timely and credible information about suspicious movements around government facilities immediately.
